Kunsthaus Dresden: Madonna

Art catalogue for Exhibition / Role: Art Direction, Lead Design

Even though it's been a few years, I have decided to include this project in my portfolio. Back then, I had the privilege of creatively accompanying an exhibition at the Kunsthaus Dresden. The exhibition exclusively featured female artists and their perspectives on precarious life situations in the areas of work, family, and society.

In addition to the exhibition design, signage system, communication materials, etc., the catalog proved to be the biggest challenge. The key visual of the exhibition was the torn pantyhose of a friend, which came as an abstract design element on the cover of the catalog in a special coating. I still love this visual element to this day.

Task: Ci developement, catalogue layout, print

Client:
Kunsthaus Dresden

Cover design with spot varnish on gold.

The key visual originated from a spontaneous snapshot while having coffee in Kreuzberg. The perpetually torn pantyhose of a friend had become her trademark and wonderfully embodied the unconventional works of the artists and their precarious situations.

The typography concept was also quickly established. It required two font types that could be juxtaposed in a visible contrast. A very playful yet sophisticated font contrasts with a clear and sober type font. This contrast enlivens an otherwise clear and straightforward design.

18 artists combined on 143 pages. The work was exciting. The introduction very lengthy. Finally … the exhibition … big fun.
